Question: I have a constant urge to have BM, and nothing comes out, or very little. I've been taking Metamucil, the buik is better, but the urge stays. I'm very frustrated. Do you think it's nerves?

Brief Answer:
Try enema suppositories

Detailed Answer:
Hello there, Welcome to HCM.

This is common in elders to urge to move bowels. The rectum does not empty completely due to various reasons due to lax sphincter, lack of pressure and fibre.

Oh yeah nerves and neuropathy may be an issue as well. I suggest you to squat for sometime so that the rectum straightens and you can empty the bowel.

I sometimes advice patients to spray a constant jet of water near the anal opening which eases the remaining stool to pass out easily.

If these things fail you should get the enema suppository a very small amount.

Also if you are due for colonoscopy please get it done (with a positive family history of colon cancer)

Hope this trick helps.
