Posted on Tue, 9 Sep 2014
Question: My child is 4 months old. We have moved location. She has cold and cough for the last two days. Her old doctor had prescribed mucolite, nasoclear for 5 days. She doesnt have any fever. However since her cold was worse we took her to the nearest pediatricia.where She has been nebulised today and the doctor prescribed the following... effrine syrup 1ml 3 times a day for 3 days, synclar dry syrup 1.5ml for 2days and ambrodil s 2.5ml 3 times for 5 days. I want to know if these new medicines are safe to be given to infants in the dosage prescribed?

Brief Answer:
viral illness

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for the query.
It looks like viral illness.
As there is no fever, you can give nebulisation with salbutamol and normal saline.
Saline nasal drops will help to relieve decongestion.

I think effrine syrup is not necessary and should be avoided.

Rest of the treatment like syp. synclar and ambrodil-s can be contuinued , as you have already started with the antibiotics complete the course now.

For cold you can use sinarest - af (dose depends on weight)drops after consulting a doctor.

Hope i helped you.

Dear Doctor
thank you for your reply.
can you tell me why effrine syrup needs to be avoided. Also since I was concerned about the usage of the antibiotics of such high dosage for my infant, I have already only given her 0.5ml of each of those prescribed.
Actually I am on vacation with the baby and hope to return back only after a month by then I will be back to consulting her regular pediatrician. I have been concerned about the change in doctor and medicines. Hence my query. .

Brief Answer:
give the dose as advised.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for the query.
Give the dose of antibiotics as advised by the doctor.
Otherwise it will cause resistance to the drug and infection may also flare up.
As we can not say for sure that there is no bacterial infection.

Reason i tell you to avoid effrin was, as per my knowledge it contains cardiac stimulant drug.

Still i would like to know the content of the medicine effrin which you are giving , to avoid any confusion.

Hope i helped you.

It is effrine syrup. RX-each5ml contains phenylephrine hydrocloride 5mg and chlorpheniramine maleate 2mg.its shown as an antihistamine and decongestant. Okay. I shall give the dosage as prescribed by the doctor. I am just worried since she is such a small child and giving her such high doses. ..but thank you for your reply.

Brief Answer:
ok you can give effrin.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for the follow up.
As you told the content of effrin syp. It looks okay for cold in the child.
As this brand name is not popular in my region i googled it to find the content which misguides me.
No need to worry about the high doses , the treating doctor must have given the doses as per the weight of the child.
So finally go according to the treating doctor.
Hope your child a speedy recovery.
