Question: I have experienced severely difficult sitautions in my life, including deaths of my husband , son and only brother. Some situation from the past keep turning up in my mind and I experience the mental pain again and again. At least with physical pain it is impossible to recall it ,but mental pain goes on and on. I am seeing a psychiatrist, and taking lexapro. I feel that I am regressing, having suffered depression since childhood. Traumatic experiences keep recurring and I feel I am reaching the end. How can I forget the past?

Brief Answer:
I think you are on the right path to forget traumatic past

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for using healthcare magic.

I read your query and understand your concerns about the repeated thoughts about the traumatic past and depression.

First of all I like to inform you that lexapro and therapy which are undergoing are helpful in coming out of depression and its effects on your day to day life.

I like to add few things helpful in the recovery process.

First do not try to forget the past. I think this is not a proper way of doing it. Instead occupy your brain with some or other activities. In other words do not leave enough time for your brain to think about anything.

Second develop at least few hobbies. This is extension of point one but need to be done.

Third have a practice of positive self talk. I understand it is not easy task but I think easier than bearing the mental and physical pain.

Finally make a list of positive things in your life. This is somehow difficult when you are depressed but it does not mean only negative events took place in your life.

Last but not least do not forget to Thank the almighty to be on your side despite having all odds in your life.

I hope this helps you.
If you have any further query, I would be glad to help you.
