Question: I was diagnosed with clamydia. I have been with my boyfriend for a year and a half and he had a physical 3 weeks ago and tested negative. What explanation can there be for this?

Unfortunately, the test aren't always accurate. You and him both need retesting and treatment. The treatment is luckily fairly basic with antibiotic. Long term effects can cause infertility, joint pains, and various problems - so get tested and treated!

I have already started treatment and we won't be able to get retested until days from now. I have some more questions.
How long can a person have this without knowing. Is it possible that either one of us got it from our previous relationships which would have been more than a year and a half ago.
Also if the answer is yes why would he not get it from me during this time since my test was the one that was positive?

Most cases are asymptomatic, especially in females. However it is the most commonly diagnosis sexual transmitted bacterial infection due to routine screening.
Occasionally, some people will get vaginal or urethral discharge which may be the only symptom. There is usually no pain or other symptoms until the infection disseminates from the vagina into the abdominal compartment.
You should refrain from sexual contact with anyone for 7 days after treatment is completed. In addition, you should use condoms until you are screened again. You should be screened for all sexual transmitted diseases including gonorrhea, syphilis, and HIV.
Prognosis is very good with treatment. You or your boyfriend could have had the infection for many years without ever knowing. The test might have no been accurate. He should be treated just like you.
