default
Posted on Thu, 12 Nov 2015
Question: I had my first ultrasound guided injection for calcific tendinitis this afternoon. The specialist told me that there was a bit of give in the calcium and was able to aspirate a bit of it. Having a repeat injection in a fortnight. He also advised me that i may require a small operation to remove the calcium if the injection doesn't work. What are your thoughts?

Brief Answer:
Surgical removal helpful to relieve pain

Detailed Answer:
Hi there.

Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

Thanks for the query.

Calcific tendinitis is a buildup of calcium between the Rotator cuff muscles in the shoulder.

You may have be subjected to Ultrasound Barbotage, where a bit of normal saline or salt solution is injected in the area of the calcium deposition and the dissolved calcium is aspirated.

If the calcium is present after this procedure, it requires surgical removal of it is causing you pain and discomfort on performing overhead activities or lifting weights. This will reduce the chances of Rotator cuff muscle injury.

You can go ahead with this procedure after you understand the risks and possible complications like infection, Muscle tear, bleeding, shoulder pain after surgery. Kindly discuss the same with your treating Doctor.

I hope I have answered your query.

I will be available to answer your follow up.

Dr. Aashish Raghu

What I had today was a barbotage as far as I'm aware. I'm having another one in a fortnight. However if I need keyhole surgery to remove it so be it. The fact that the specialist was able to aspirate some calcium today, is that a good sign?

Brief Answer:
Surgery may be required for relief

Detailed Answer:
Hi there.

Thanks for the follow up query.

Being able to dissolve and remove some calcium deposits is good and indicates that key hole surgery can indeed remove all the diseased tissue.

Surgery is definitely required if you are in pain and difficuly moving your arm.

I hope I have answered your query.
