Suggest Treatment For Blister Like Rash On Abdomen

default
Posted on Tue, 30 Dec 2014
Question: My father is a 76 yr old with parkinson's and severe neuropathy in his legs and feet. He has been feeling unwell recently and has now, in the last 24hrs developed a blister like rash on his abdomen, right hip and right lower back. We initially put a topical steroid on but I think it is shingles. As it is the week-end I'm wondering if there is anything else we can do to help ease the discomfort . I made an appointment to see his doctor on Monday.

Brief Answer:
different aspects of treatment

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

The main aspect of management of shingles are: (1) conservative methods including the application of sterile saline solutions which can be obtained from your local pharmacy.

The solution is placed onto a clean bandage or dressing and applied for 30 to 60 minutes, 4 to 6 times a day

This helps to dry up the blisters and speed up the healing process. It also reduces the risk of infection.
If saline is not available- burow solution can be used

Calamine lotion can help with any itching

(2)pain management

The pain can be severe in many cases and the medication that is most helpful would be only available by prescription from his doctor, though since he has neuropathy , he may already have some of the commonly used meds.

Most of the meds are neurologically based eg lyrica, gabapentin, tegretol, amitriptyline,

If these medications are not available then the use of over counter pain medication may be helpful such as ibuprofen, naproxen, aspirin- these should be used on a full stomach

(3)consider the shingles vaccine- it would reduce the incidence of future episodes

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
