Suggest Treatment For Back Pain When Diagnosed With Neurogenic Bladder

Question: I have been diagnosed with a nurogenic bladder. Happened during back surgery. Dr says he did not affect any nerves (L5/S1 laminectomy). I had a foley put in when I left the out patient surgery center. They told me to take it out the next day. I then went for a couple of days without completely emptying my bladder, just dribbles or low stream. This happened in XXXXXXX Since then I have been able to get some out and have been self cathing. There were two occasions after exercise that I emptied my bladder normally with a strong stream. I thought this strange, if I can do it once why can't I continue? For the last couple of weeks (since I hurt my back again) I have not been able to urinate any on my own I think because of the pain and drugs. I am getting steroid shots for my back to reduce the pain. Does a neurogenic bladder ever come back? If so, how long does it take? Anything I can do to help this?

i had gone through your question and i can understand your concern

i have seen a number of patients with neurogenic bladder in clinic most of the cases has shown a significant improvement with the treatment

your low back ache could be related to UTI due to incomplete voiding of urine or retrograde reflux of urine to ureter or kidney

I would advise you to consult a urologist for examination a battery of tests like blood sugar to rule out diabetes and retrograde urethrography for complete assessment of the problem

in my opinion you should get your blood sugar and urine culture test as well as ultrasound and PSA test to rule out prostate disorder
You may need to continue with foleys catheter or medicines which relaxes bladder and prostate muscle for complete voiding of urine

maintain good hygiene
wash your hands with antiseptic solutions or soap and clean water during catheterisation
have plenty of fresh fruits and lots of water

Thanks, you mention improvement with treatment. I did have a bladder infection had that treated and the infection is gone after 2 weeks of anti biotics, I did have a prostate biopsy done and that came back negative. What is the typical timeframe from an over extended bladder?
