Suggest Treatment For Arthritis Of Left Shoulder

default
Posted on Tue, 30 Dec 2014
Question: Doc says I do have arthritis of left shoulder, but it's not bone on bone and nothing much to do at this point. Recently the pain from shoulder seems to have radiated towards breast, upper chest under collar bone. It also feels like congested lymph. When I massage deep into the front of the shoulder bone it helps somewhat. What do you think is happening?

Brief Answer:
Can be muscular pain or tendonitis.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The pain that you have in the shoulder radiating to breast and upper chest can be due to a frozen shoulder or tendonitis. Since the pain gets relieved on massaging, it is likely to be a muscular or inflammatory pain.
If there are any palpable lymph nodes in the axilla then mammography and FNAC of the lymph node are required to find the exact cause.
If there is a restriction of movement around the shoulder then frozen shoulder is a more likely cause of the pain.
If the pain is not such intense, you may consider waiting for few more days. Hot compress the affected part frequently. Avoid any activities involving the affected shoulder and definitely no physical exercises, pushing and pulling. Anti-inflammatory treatment like topical pain balms application and oral drugs like Advil (ibuprofen) 400mg twice a day after food will give added relief.

You can consult an orthopedic directly / through your local physician if the pain remains despite the above measures. X ray of the shoulder and cervical region are entailed.

I hope this answers your query.

Thank you Dr. Tayal. Very helpful as I have been overworking the shoulder and will rest it more and I like the idea of the hot compresses. And I will try some advil. I wonder what causes a "frozen" shoulder? Thank you again. XXXX

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Inflammation of the tendons and capsule around the shoulder joint, arthritis and diabetes are the main causes of frozen shoulder. Do consult your orthopedician for stronger muscle relaxants in case the above mentioned measures do not help.
Hope my answer is helpful.
