Suggest Treatment For Anxiety, Depression When Treating Cervical Spondylitis

Posted on Mon, 12 Jan 2015
Question: Halo Doctor, Since 2 years I have been suffering from anxiety, some kinda depression and feel some time unreal. One of my doctor in US prescribed me klonopin for sometime(0.5mg). Surprisingly, i feel very good when take the pill for at least two to three days. Even i do not feel any drowsiness, indeed it makes me so active and happy. Since, then whenever i feel low or depressed i eat one pill (twice in a week)......so far so good. Wondering, what could be the problem with me? Am I addict to Clonazepam? Of note, i have mild cervical spondylitis when first started using this drug.

I appreciate your suggestion.

Brief Answer:
Anxiety disorder - A Chemical Imbalance, you have many treatment options

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for choosing health care magic for posting your query.
I have gone through your question in detail and I can understand what you are going through.
The condition that you are having is basically anxiety disorder. This occurs cause of imbalance of certain neurotransmitters in the brain. especially serotonin, nor adrenaline, and dopamine to some extent. Medicines are the best options to take care of these symptoms. Paroxetine is the the most popular medicine and my drug of choice. I generally prescribe my patients 12.5 mg per day at night which takes care of anxiety symptoms. Also certain medicines like propranolol and clonazepam can be give as required when there is a panic episode or expected situation where panic attack can appear.
When you take klonopin, your anxiety goes down and that makes you feel good. In short you are treating your anxiety with clonozepam. However its a superficial treatment and although not right now, but there is a risk of dependence. Hence getting it treated with paroxetine would be a better option.
Also there is an option of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). This therapy is taken by either a psychologist or a psychiatrist in which the therapist identifies impaired cognitions (Thoughts) and try to correct them. They are 15-20 min weekly session and there should be around 8-10 sessions to help you with your illness.
Hope I am able to answer your concerns.
