Suggest Treatment For Ankle Fracture

default
Posted on Tue, 7 Oct 2014
Question: I wrote a few weeks ago about that I broke my ankle in 3 places. I'm using a wheel chair to get around and also a walker. From using the walker, because I can't put my right foot down, Im hopping on my left foot and putting all my weight on my arms and its causing me muscle aches and strains in my arms, shoulders and neck. I hate to take any medication, is there anything I can do to eleviate the sprained arms, shoulders and neck. I still need to wear the cast for another 3 more weeks. My orthopedic gave me a script for a bone density testing. My identical twin sister had one taken and she has osteoporosis, can that be genetic with identical twins.

Brief Answer:
You need to learn crutch walking

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

I have studied your case and I think you are not walking properly with crutches. I would suggest you to meet a physiotherapist and learn how to walk with walker/crutches. Hopping is not certainly right as it put so much load on shoulder. Not only this put you can fall again and damage your injured ankle.
One more option you have is to apply a walking cast. It is more thicker then a normal cast and it allows you to put weight so you do not need to jump.

I would also recommend you to take calcium and vitamin D3 regularly so that your bone become stronger and fracture heal faster.

For muscle pain you can take Tramadol after discussing with your doctor. You cal also use voletran ointment, and hot water fomentation.

Pattern of genetic inheritance of osteoporosis is not clearly known. So we are unable to define your risks of developing osteoporosis. However as I said I suspect improper walking technique as the cause of pain in your case.
I hope these measures will help you. Let me know if there is any other followup questions.
Thansks.
