Suggest Treatment For Acute Lower Back Pain

default
Posted on Fri, 9 Dec 2016
Question: I have acute bilateral low back pain x 10 days. (feels like muscle) Thought is was due to my mattress so started sleeping in a different bedroom...still no relief. Had a professional message yesterday and some immediate relief but only for a few hours. Then I thought it could be a side effect of methotrexate that I just started on 7 weeks ago due to RA which I was just diagnosed with. Does this have anything to do with it?. I have never had kidney problems and drinking water and urinating just fine. No trauma. I'm 57 years old.

Brief Answer:
Lumbar Spondylosis

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX, I am Dr Gopal Goel , Orthopedic Surgeon
You have bilateral low back pain for 10 days and you have been diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis and are on methotrexate.
Methotrexate does not cause back pain - so no worries on this account.
In my opinion you have back pain due to Lumbar Spondylosis which is a common condition - a degenerative change happening in your lumbar spine with age. Rheumatoid Arthritis can be a contributory factor - but it happens in late stage.
I suggest you start pain killers , muscle relaxants and most important - Isometric Back Exercises which any physiotherapist can teach you.In case you don't get relief in 10 days , go for an X Ray of lower back.
Hope I have answered your question. Pl don't hesitate to ask any further questions.
