Question: I had bronchitis in March and since then I have experienced bronchial tightness. Asthma doctor and pcp have said it is inflammation from heart surgery I had in December on top of have a bad bout of bronchitis. X-rays show clear lungs and lung function tests shows low level of normal results. Was put on advair 115 2 times a day. How long will it take for the inflammation subside? Could it be something else?

Brief Answer:
should clear within 6 months

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
We can sometimes never completely explain why inflammatory reactions happen in some patients like this. It is true that any surgery or severe illness can trigger an inflammatory reaction. These reactions can last for months. Hopefully the advair will treat your symptoms and you will be able to taper off of it in the next few months. It is a very good sign that your CXR and pulmonary function tests were normal. If the condition persists then you may need a CT of the chest, repeat pulmonary testing and some testing for autoimmune diseases such as lupus.
I wish you complete recovery soon,
Dr. Robinson

Hi,

Thank you dor the reply. I too hope that the symptoms resolve soin too. Can you explain what low level of normal means on a spirometry?

Answered by Dr. Kathy Robinson (3 hours later)
Brief Answer:
primarily FEV1

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
When spirometry is done the primary measure to look for obstructive disease like asthma or COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) is FEV1 which stand for Forced Expiratory Volume in one second. When that gets low it means that there is some obstruction to air flow out of the lungs. You probably had on the low end of normal in your FEV1 measure on spirometry.

Dr. Robinson
