Suggest Treatment For Acne Scars And Dandruff

Posted on Fri, 15 Jul 2016
Question: I am suffering from acne and acne scars since last ten years. I also have scaly dandruff since a few years which sometimes spread to my face. I have tried various treatments and most of them have temporarily worked. I took 1sotretenoin 10mg for 5 months, skin cleared up and I discontinued the treatment, but the condition relapsed in a few months.
Is it advisable for me to go on isotretenoin again?

Brief Answer:
I am favor of restarting isotretinoin

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for writing to us

I am dr.kakkar(dermatologist). I have gone through your query and i have noted your concern.

Many patients of acne might require repeated courses if isotretinoin, soecially in those whose acne is prone to scar. I am certainly in favour of restarting isotretinoin if need be. It would benefit both acne as well as seborrheic dermatitis/ dandruff.

Thank you for the advice, doctor.
I have this apprehension: Isotretnoin causes fetal damage if conception occurs while on it. Is it possible that damage may occur if conception occurs years later, since trace amounts may still be present in the body?

Also, can it aggravate conditions like PCOS?

Brief Answer:
Information about isotretinoin

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

Pregnancy has to be avoided during treatment with isotretinoin and for 1 month after discontinuing treatment by which time it would have been completely eliminated from body. Thereafter there is no adverse effect on pregnancy.
Isotretinoin has no adverse effect on hormones or on PCOS. Infact it can be combined alongside treatment for PCOS.
