Question: What's this red bump on my penis? Genital wart, pimple, ingrown....etc?? Help

Today while using the bathroom I noticed a red bump on my penis. This seemingly happened OVERNIGHT. I remember checking down there just a couple days ago and this thing was not there, and now all of a sudden it is...

The bump is raised, red, and appears inflamed. It's not painful, and to my untrained and unprofessional eye is forming a white spot in the middle sort of like a pimple. Is it possible to get pimples down there?

Attached are some pictures which will help identify it much better than a description.

I am sexually active with a new partner, and have been seeing her for only three weeks; in that time we have had unprotected sex once about two weeks ago. It's my understanding that warts take longer than this to appear however? Before that my last partner was over three months ago, in which we had protected sex.

What is this thing? Should I be worried?

If you need any other info please ask.

Also I realize the pictures aren't the best quality and can try to add some better ones if necessary.

A little more info: it's smooth and maybe itches slightly. Looks kind of like a pimple I would get on my face. No indentation in the middle

Brief Answer:
Simple folliculitis. Not related to any STD

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Welcome and thanks for posting your query to the forum.

I can understand your concern for the red bump over the penile area. I have diligently gone through your complete query and noted your concern.

After thoroughly analysing all the pictures let me reassure you first that the bump appears to be simple folliculitis. It doesn't appear to be any Sexually transmitted infection.

To tell you simply : our skin has hair roots along with oil glands attached to it. Whenever there is any minor friction to hair root or blockage of pore is there then the root along with the oil glands van get inflamed thus giving a red bumpy appearance.

The most important point is overnight appearance of the bump. This happens only in folliculitis rather than any Sexually transmitted infection. In herpes we find mutiple small blisters which are very painful a nd within 1 day becomes ulcers. In molluscum contagiosum we find whitish or pale bump with central indentation but it takes mutiple weeks to reach to present size which is visible in pictures.

In my patients with your kind of problem I suggest them to apply an antibacterial cream such as Mupirocin or fucidin cream over the affected area. An anti inflammatory tablet such as paracetamol or ibuprofen can be taken for once or twice a day for three days.

If in next 24 hours yiu feel that it is increasing or becoming more painful then an antibiotic tablet is necessary.

I further suggest you to not to touch or pinch or pop the area as can get more infected. Wear lose cotton clothes and cotton undergarments to be changed twice a day. Maintain a good hygiene and avoid heat and humidity.

I hope this helps.
