Brief Answer:
If you are not bleeding, is unlikely that you are having a miscarriage

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and I hope I can help you today.

Urinary tract infections are extremely common during pregnancy. Most commonly, they cause frequency and urgency of urination and some degree of pelvic pain. Urinary tract infections do not cause miscarriage. If you are not having other symptoms of miscarriage such as vaginal bleeding along with severe cramping, there is no reason to suspect that your pregnancy is in danger.

Having hip pain and difficulty walking is not a common symptom of either miscarriage or a urinary tract infection. This should be evaluated by your physician, but it is not a symptom of anything that is urgent.

Getting proper treatment of a urinary tract infection when you are pregnant is important, because during pregnancy, urinary tract infections can more easily spread to the kidneys. A kidney infection is called pyelonephritis, which can sometimes necessitate admission to the hospital for IV antibiotics for treatment.

However, if you have an appointment with your physician within the next 24 hours I think it certainly is reasonable to wait until your appointment to be evaluated by a physician. Your doctor should check a urine specimen and evaluated for signs of urinary tract infection. If those are present, they most likely will give your prescription for an antibiotic that is safe to use during pregnancy.

But again, I want to reassure you that having symptoms of urinary tract infection or back and hip pain are not symptoms of miscarriage. Delay in treatment for up to 24 hours is reasonable and will not increase any risk to the baby.

In the meantime, trying to drink as much water as possible to flush your kidneys and if you have access to it, drinking cranberry juice can help to decrease urinary tract infection symptoms. If you need any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me.

I hope that I was able to adequately answer your question today, and that my advice was helpful.

Best wishes and good luck with the pregnancy,

Dr. Brown.

Thank you. That helps to put my mind at ease. Do you know of any reason why I would be having the pain in my pelvic area and hips?

Brief Answer:
Pelvic pain is common with UTIs, and hip pain may be due to pregnancy

Detailed Answer:
Hello, I hope I can help you today. I apologize for the delay in my reply.

There are many reasons why women have pelvic pain during early pregnancy. The urinary tract infection may likely be why you may be having discomfort, however as the uterus expands many people feel a pressure sensation. Regarding your hip pain, the hormones of pregnancy make women's hips looser and more flexible so that they may expand as the uterus grows. However, at five weeks is very unusual to feel the symptoms. So without being able to perform physical examination, it really is not possible to speculate what the exact cause of your hip pain.

But in the meanwhile, you likely will be having a doctor visit shortly. I sincerely hope your local physician is able to get down to the bottom of what is going on, and that you feel better soon.

Regards,

Dr. Brown
