Suggest Treatment For Lennox Gastaut Syndrome

Posted on Mon, 2 Mar 2015
Question: I have a son who has mitochondrial disorder and XXXXXXX gastaut syndrome. Since November his seizures have been increasing that myself and the school has notified. His father and I are no longer together and up until the past two weeks dad was saying he was not seeing seizures. My son has been so bad at school he's had to be strapped in his wheelchair due to atonics. My question is this knowing that seizures can indeed vary in frequency how likely is it that only the school and I are seeing seizures? What is the probability that he was having them and dad was either not reporting or recognizing them? Which scenario is more likely? Could it be environmental? Stress related? Thank you in advance I have tried to ask his doctor and I'm not getting a response

Brief Answer:
Multiple seizures a day.Difficult to miss.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXX,
Thanks for being on healthcaremagic.com.
I am Dr.Ajay Panwar,a neurologist,here to answer your query.

I have gone through your son's medical and treatment history.
XXXXXXX gastaut syndrome is by definition a syndrome of multiple seizure types and many seizures a day. Falls associated with atonic and tonic seizures are not easy for anybody to miss them, who lives close to the patient.

When a syndrome by nature is such, that it is clinically defined by many seizures everyday, then enviornmental changes don't really matter much. Seizures associated with XXXXXXX gastaut syndrome are not enviornmental dependent.
Otherwise however, stress and enviornmental changes in general are known to influence the frequency of seizures to some extent.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have some more questions,I shall be glad to answer else, please close the thread-rate it and write a review.

So if I am understanding you it is more probable that kiddo was indeed not having seizures at dads house despite having 15+ atonics the hour before picking him up as he had been all day? Atonic for him is typically eyes fluttering and head drops. Recent full body. I am just wondering because I feel like dad either wasn't reporting or is denying them and that earlier intervention back when they first started increasing would have prevented his current situation he was swiped 9 times in two hours with his vns on Tuesday and had to have diastat and is requiring swiping several times a day now where as in November when I first noticed them he was hardly ever having to be swiped. Thank you in advance

Brief Answer:
Early treatment has a better prognosis.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX,
Thanks for being in follow-up.

It is true that any disorder if treated early carries a better prognosis.Same holds true for 'lennox gastaut syndome'.Though, seizures in XXXXXXX gastaut syndrome by nature,do not respond well to treatment, however,if treatment is started early, then about 30%of the patients can show improvement or even complete reversal in some cases.

So,it would have been better if proper treatment could have been started earlier for your kid. However, lets pray to God for him and hope for improvement in him.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have some follow up questions,I shall be glad to answer else, please close the thread-rate it and write a review.
