Question: hello, I have a son who is 23 months old. He threw up once on Monday, and has been drinking some, has had wet diapers, ran a fever(99.7) Monday, but not since, he has not had much of an appetite, and been sleeping more than normal. he is not pulling at his ears, and when I use the ear thermometer to check his temp he doesn't seem to bother. he had a couple diapers with very runny BM's, no texture to them. Could this be the flu still running it's course, really no other symptoms, and did not throw up again until today, after he had some milk. but has not been eating much at all

Brief Answer:
Viral illness with diarrhea

Detailed Answer:
Hi...Thank you for consulting in Health Care magic.

It seems your kid is having a viral diarrhoea. Unless the kid's having low urine output or very dull or excessively sleepy or blood in motion or green bilious vomiting...you need not worry.

There is no need to use antibioitcs unless there is blood in the motion. Antibiotics might worsen if unnecessarily used causing antibiotic associated diarrhoea.

I suggest you use zinc supplements (Z&D drops 1ml once daily for 14 days) & ORS (Each small packet mixed in 200ml of potable water and keep giving sip by sip) as hydration is very important and crucial part of treatment. If there is vomiting you can use Syrup Ondansetron (2.5ml thrice a day, half an hour before feeding).

Keeping him hydrated is the most important aspect. Do not worry about the appetite if he is active.

Hope my answer was helpful for you. I am happy to help any time. Further clarifications and consultations on Health care magic are welcome. If you do not have any clarifications, you can close the discussion and rate the answer. Wish your kid good health.

Brief Answer:
When to approach for medical help

Detailed Answer:
Hi...thanks for the trust in me.

Regarding the duration of the loose stools, we need to worry if the kid is losing weight and if it prolonging more than 14 days. Generally it will settle within 7 days.

As I have posted in my previous suggestion, unless there is low urine output or very dull or excessively sleepy or blood in motion or green bilious vomiting...you need not worry. But if any of these develop, you need to approach for medical help.
