Posted on Tue, 29 Mar 2016
Question: Can I use equivalent amount of KI (not SSKI) to relieve cough congestion? I only want to use it for short term, a dose or two.
My doctor not aware of SSKI will not prescribe but the prescribed antibiotics cause severe gut problems.

Brief Answer:
You can use it.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for asking

I read your question and i understand your concern. Potassium iodide is a good mucolytics and congestion reliever and you may use it but your doctor might not be willing due to its widespread adverse effects.

A dose or two just to relieve some congestion wont do much harm though. Just keep an eye on adverse effects and if any side effect occurs like Nausea, vomiting, stomach ache, diarrhea, metallic taste in the mouth, fever, headache, or acne then discontinue it. Talk to your doctor and let them decide what is best for you.

Apart from it simple saline water or humidified air and steam inhalation can relieve congestion too.

I hope it helps. take good care of yourself and dont forget to close the discussion please.

I assume you mean KI is equivalent to SSKI with the dose adjusted for the different concentration.
