Question: Have broken ribs a week ago. I have extreme pain. Have taken codeine/paracetamol then Tramadol/paracetamol - both with unpleasant side effects. My A&E doctor mentioned morphine patches. How many could I use before becoming addicted? Are there any side effects. If yes, what are they? Thank you so much.

Brief Answer:
Varies but often requires about 2weeks for any addiction!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about these broken ribs and the pains you have reported. I have reviewed your information and the longer you stay on morphine, the higher tech chances of becoming addicted. Also, taking huge doses can also hasten up this process. However, most persons go for at least two weeks before having serious complications around this.

The main side effect of morphine is constipation. For this, increase your fruits, fluids and fiber intake alongside regular physical activity to improve on your transit habits.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Feel free to follow up with more for more information and clarifications if need be. Above all, thanks for using our services.
