Suggest Tests To Diagnose Eagle Syndrome

default
Posted on Fri, 24 Oct 2014
Question: Hi, my name's XXXXXXX

I have a suspected Eagle syndrome or TMJ disorder. My jaw surgeon says that CT scan is necessary for the diagnosis and to guide surgery. I want to avoid unnecessary radiation and would much prefer an MRI. Is he telling the truth or is MRI sufficient for both of these possible conditions? Thanks a lot in advance.

Best,

Brief Answer:
Ct scan is better

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Considering the fact that your diagnosis is not very sure , i would recommend that you go ahead with a Ct scan as it will pick up most of the abnormalities of bone and joint and give a clearer picture specially if you have eagles syndrome.

Mri may not be of much help in eagles syndrome , although it is very useful in TMJ disorders.

On the whole , i would recommend that you go ahead with a CT scan.

Take care!
