Question: I am recovering from a fractured right foot, all five metatarsals and four were compound. Date XXXXXXX 19 2015. Surgery, XXXXXXX 24. I am just out of boot with weightbearing as tolerated. I fell out of bed night before last. I was a bit confused and used my right foot to get up. Now it is swelled to twice it's size and the swelling is now going up my leg past my knee. I have an appt in the morning for xray and dr visit.can I wait or should I go to ER. Worried about the swelling going up my leg.I was also in the hospital with Acute Kidney Failure last week that could be something too. Dehydration.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
From the history what you have given, both possibilities are there.
Either you have hurt your foot again or this is due to kidney failure.
as you have been operated in month of XXXXXXX and now its almost November, so it is almost +4 months, so usually bone fractures heal over a period of 6 weeks, not totally but almost to 90% strength.
second thing is you told you have history of hospitalization for acute kidney failure just last week.
usually kidney problems cause reduced output and cause increase in swelling over legs and face too.
According to my knowledge I feel this swelling which is going past the knees is more attributable to kidney cause rather than the fall causing anything.
I have few questions-
1. Are you taking any analgesic on continuous basis since surgery? If yes which one.
2. Are you having reduced urine output in recent days?
3. Do you have any facial swelling around eyes usually which is more in morning and reduced as day goes?
About your worry, I feel you can hang on till morning because it will not aggravate in 1 night very bad. As it is you have appt tomorrow morning with your doctor. Also consult nephrologist when you go tomorrow.
I hope I have answered your query well.
Awaiting your response.
Thank you.
