Question: My sister is experiencing painful urination. When she urinates, nothing comes out. She also says there is a fishy odor. She wears tight underwear. Can this possibly be a UTI?

Brief Answer:
UTI likely.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
Your sister's symptoms indicate she has a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI), which is more common in females than in males. Not to worry, as it is not something which is untreatable or life threatening, but she needs a prompt medical attention to address this issue. Kindly ask her to visit a Primary Care Physician or a proficient Gynecologist, so that she may do a physical assessment and suggest few tests like Bloodwork, Urinalysis, Urine Culture or Ultrasound abdomen to rule out Urinary infection or to authenticate her clinical findings.

The treatment plan will be formulated accordingly after confirmation. Antibiotics are the typical treatment for a UTI.
She will have to be put on antibiotics. Most commonly a Fluroquinolone like Tab Levofloxacin for 14 days followed by a repeat urine routine.
If the urine grows an organism the antibiotic can be changed to what that organism is sensitive to.
Drink plenty of water
Use protection during intercourse and her partner should undergo a urine routine as well.

Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have.
Wishing you good health.
Regards.
