Suggest Remedy For Nose Bleeds And Fatigue In An Elderly Person

Posted on Fri, 11 Dec 2015
Question: I have, I think, a sinus infection. My nose sometimes drips blood. And especially when I blow my nose.
I suffer from a lack of strength, and desire to sleep most of the time. I am a WWII vet, and soon will
be 91 years young. My voice has changed - now raspy. Can a sinus infection, the only thing that I know is wrong with me, cause this trouble?

Brief Answer:
It is better to get examined.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. A post nasal drip of mucus due to sinusitis can cause a raspy voice.

2. Blood from the nose signifies an injury to the delicate lining of the nose. Along with sinusitis, besides an antibiotic (Cephalexin), saline nasal drops to moisturise the nose, anti-allergic , mucolytic and anti-inflammatory medication will be required. Blood tests to check the bleeding and clotting parameters (coagulogram) and monitoring of blood pressure and any concomitant medication is routine.

3. A quick simple look into the nose and throat with a nasal endoscope and a Videolaryngoscopy (VL'Scopy) is recommended. Upload these test results for discussing further treatment options.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.

Brief Answer:
Yes, this is possible.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for writing back.

1. The internal surface area of the para nasal sinuses is large, hence the toxins and by products od infection and resulting inflammation are easily absorbed into the body and blood stream.

2. This leads to the feeling of fatigue and tiredness all the time.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.

Is there any medication, other than what I am taking that will help me with this
problem? I'm taking Cephalexin 250 mg Cap Lup. This infection makes me
sleepy. What will help that problem?

Brief Answer:
It will be better to get examined first.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for writing back.

1. It will be better to get examined first, especially if the bleeding is from one side of the nose and if the change in voice persists.

2. Medications such as ethamsylate, tranexamic acid help stop bleeding, but these should only be taken under the supervision of your doctor.

3. Other supportive medication is as described in the first answer.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
