Question: Hello, I had a rool canal at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, 8-28-15. As time went after the procedure, the pain became worse and worse. Even medication lasted around 2 1/2 hrs. I have experienced fever, my jaw is swollen to more than twice its size.. I called the doctor on call but got little help. Is this normal. I have taken so much pain medication that I am becoming nauseous. Please help me!

Brief Answer:
Endodontic flare up,medication

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your query. I have gone through your query.
As far as the pain, swelling following root canal treatment is concerned, it can be because of the endodontic flare up. It is not common, but some times it can happen following root canal treatment. Nothing to be panic, continue the course of antibiotics preferably a combination of amoxicillin and metronidazole (if you are not allergic). The symptoms will come down in two days. For the nausea you can take an antacid with anti emetic like pantoprazole and domperidone respectively.
I hope I have answered your query. If any queries are there reply me back.
Take care.

Thank you for your reply. I am already taking ery-tabec. I am allergic to penicillin. Yesterday morning I noticed a 2-inch "gum boil" on the gum above my tooth. As time went on, the pain lessened. My endodonist lanced the pustule and left a flat double T drain that I just removed. I think the swelling has gone down, but I am running a fever now and feel really badly. I am having a little pain but nothing like before. Do you think anything else is going on? Will this resolve itself? Thank you

P.S. If the pustule swells really large again. I will go back to endo.

Brief Answer:
Tooth infection, pus formation,Root canal treatment

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your feedback.
Nothing to worry about the gum boil, the tooth has got infected and there is formation of pus. Good you informed about your allergy to penicillin.
Once you complete the course of the antibiotics, that is erythromycin tablets, consult the endodontist and get the root canal treatment done. That will solve the issue. The gum boil will resolve in 3-5 days time after taking the medicine but you need to get the tooth treated with root canal treatment for a permanent solution.
The gum boil will not solve by its own.
I hope i have answered your query. If any queries are there reply me back. Take care.
