Brief Answer:
You can continue giving the syrup 2.5 ml daily three times

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing in.

I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.

1. CHESTON EXP syrup contains bromhexine hydrochloride 4 mg, guaiphenesin 50 mg, chlorphenamine maleate 2 mg/5 mL.

2. It is prescribed in severe cold for children and adults.

3. Children below 6 years are prescribed 2.5 ml of the syrup three times daily.

4. Your child is getting the correct dose and there is no need to worry.

5. She might be tired from having cold and therefore feeling drowsy. Please continue giving the medicine in recommended dose.

Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Brief Answer:
Please find details below

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing back with an update.

1. You have raised a valuable point and I appreciate your question.

2. The use of expectorants in children differs among doctors. While some doctors prefer to give these syrups in those below 2 years, few other might give if the baby is above that age. Some doctors also prefer to give the syrup for only children above 4 years of age.

3. However these medicines are mild and do not cause any serious side effects. It is given to reduce symptoms and make the child comfortable and the cough becomes thin. As a general dose it is said that children below 6 years might be given 2.5 ml three times daily and 6 to 12 years might have it 5 ml three times daily.

4. If your child is doing better and thick cough has reduced then you might ask your doctor whether to stop giving the syrup. This syrup should be given only when required and if the doctor has prescribed it. Even if you reduce dose to 1.5 or 2 ml then also it is acceptable because what the medicine does is make the cough thin. This way your child will sleep for normal time.

5. The sleep might be due to the baby feeling weak and requiring rest and partly due to the medicine.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.
