Suggest Remedy For Constant Cough In A Diabetic

Question: My wife is on Durezol t.i.d. for last five months, after cataract surgery. For last 2 - 3 weeks, she has had a constant cough, not helped by Guaifenesin-DM, levaquin, promethazine-Codeine, or albuterol inhaler. Could this be coming from the Durezol use. - She does hold her head way back when i apply the drops. She has no fever. She is 83, diabetic, a-fib, BP, COPD (minor, doesn't seem to be a problem lately), severe RA (10 mg. prednisone daily since 1995). Other meds: Toprol, Cardizem, digoxin, Amaryl, Metformin. Thank you so much, in advance for any help you may be able to give. XXXXXXX Cramer, XXXXXXX Twp., N.J. - wife, XXXXXXX P.S. I am a retired Pharmacist.

Brief Answer:
No, this cough is not related to durezol.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question on Health Care Magic.
I can understand your concern.
Durezol is ophthalmic steroid.
It can not cause cough.
So your wife's coughing is not due to durezol.
Since she is having mild COPD, possibility of worsening of underlying COPD is more.
So better to get done PFT (Pulmonary Function Test) to rule out worsening of COPD.
On the basis of PFT report, she may need additional bronchodilators (inhaled or oral).
Another possibility is lung infection.
Since she is having long standing RA and on steroid (prednisone) since 20 years, possibility of lung Infection is high.
So also get done chest x ray.
Hope I have solved your query.
I will be happy to help you further.
Wishing good health to your wife. Thanks.
