Suggest Remedy For Chronic Pain Despite Taking Tramadol

default
Posted on Mon, 4 Jul 2016
Question: I take Tramadol 400mg a day for pain. Is there a pain medication more appropriate for chronic pain, which does not have the Opiod type of side effects. (Tylenol works, but Doctor says it will do more damage than Tramadol in the long term). The pain is lower abdominal pain, which I have suffered from on and off for 20 years and have been investigated to death, but with no definite results, except that it may be psychosomatic?

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome and thanks for your query.
If you are diagnosed to have psychosomatic pain and you agree with the diagnosis, then a small dose of tricyclic antidepressant like amitryptiline would help reduce the pain. If Gabapentin was helpful, it may be used in a small dose like 300mg twice a day. Tramadol produces addiction and you may find it difficult to come off it. Try to reduce the dose gradually and stop. Tylenol in doses upto 3 grams per day is safe if you don't have any liver or kidney problem.
Do get back if you have further questions.
Take care
