Suggest Remedy For Abdominal Pain, Difficulty Urinating And Cramps

default
Posted on Sat, 8 Aug 2015
Question: Recently, I had what I thought was a bad bout of food poisoning: diarrhea, upset stomach, chills, low grade fever. I ended up at the hospital on XXXXXXX 10th. It took me nearly two weeks to get over.

4 days ago, I ate something I thought didn't agree with me and I am having bad GI upset again. I am very nauseous, hot/cold sensation, cannot eat anything. I have pain in my lower right abdomen.

I feel I am drinking enough, however, I am having great difficulty passing urine which I did not have the last time I was sick. I feel like I need to urinate, try to and only pass a small amount. My stomach is feeling bloated.

I have muscle cramps/discomfort in my lower legs.

Everything I drink I burp up.

I also have a very bad headache I can't get rid of.

The pain just woke me up from my sleep and I don't know what to do.

Please let me know what you think.

Brief Answer:
Preventive measures against foods you are allergic to.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXX,

1. There is a definite pattern of an allergy. You seem to be allergic to some foods. This is a medical fact. Try to identify and avoid such foods.
2. The second possibility is that of an infection. Kindly perform stool and urine examinations. This helps to identify what infection you are suffering from.
3. Try to take salts of magnesia. These are available over the counter. These will help with your flatulence, burping and acid symptoms. These will even palliate nausea secondary to excessive acid in the stomach.
4. You may have to take an NSAID like Advil for muscle cramps, Advil also reduces headache. Advil is available over the counter.
5. Preventive lifestyle measures are neccesary here more than repeated medications for infection.

Tell me what you think.

I'm not sure what it could be at this point. I just came home from the Emergency Room. They gave me two liters of fluid, potassium IV and Zofran. I still feel awful.

They did a CT scan and said they found an ovarian cyst on my right ovary. They compared it to another CT scan they did last year and said it was the same one but didn't change size.

They told me to go to a gynecologist as the cyst might be what's bothering me.

They also told me to follow up with a GI specialist.

Brief Answer:
Ovarian cysts can be excised. Some pertinent information.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXX,

1. Ovarian cysts may not cause the problems you are facing.
2. The ER team gave you the electrolytes because you might have faced a hypokalemic crisis. In fact, cramps can indeed be caused by low potassium.
This is one way to handle the problem.
3. So, they are right in asking you to work with your OBGYN and Gastroenterologist in tandem.

I hope these facts help you.

Hello,

I am still very sick (cannot eat, only drinking water and a little Gatorade). I am getting very worried as this has been going on for days and I thought for sure I'd start to feel better (please see above for more information). I no longer have diarrhea. instead, I haven't been able to defecate for 5 days now.

I've been reading about ectopic pregnancy and am now worried that could be the cause. They did an HCG level at the ER and said I was not pregnant but I read ectopic pregnancies may not necessarily show up on a pregnancy test. Please tell me your thoughts on this.

Brief Answer:
You can simplify matters by seeing a gynecologist.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXX,

1. Ectopic pregnancies would still show an increase in HCG levels. The cases where the pregnancy tests come as negative, (-ve) are in isolation and are few and far between.

2. You really might want to visit a Gynaecologist, more so, sooner than a GI specialist, as I feel that ovarian cysts can indeed precipitate such issues. They can cause chemical imbalances. (Not all of them, though)

3. I have to do my duty in informing you, in your best interest that not all medical interventions can occur online. Therefore you would have to visit a Gynecologist soon.

4. The other medicines you have taken, Excedrin for pain, Nexium for acidity and nausea, and Zofran for nausea will only help palliate the problem, that is, to bring the symptoms down.

5. A gynecologist will inform you of the interventions necessary. You might hopefully be given medication to address the core issues. Perhaps there might be even no need of surgery.

6. Kindly use high fibre purgatives to increase the bulk of your bowel movements.
This will take care of the issues without any drugs necessary.

You are free to share your opinions here.

Kindly take care of your health,
Take action and find a gynecologist who might be amenable to your issues.

Dr. Neel Kudchadkar
