Question: I have upper stomach pain that feels like I got punched in the stomach. I am 3 years post Whipple procedure and do not currently take anything other than Tums occasionally for indigestion. It is been on and off the last 6 weeks. I feel maybe it's an ulcer, but don't want to rule issues with my Whipple procedure. Please help me!

Brief Answer:
Gastroscopy should be done.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Actually you wont be able to find out if its due to an ulcer or due to Whipple procedure without gastroscopy.
There is no anatomical connections between stomach and duodenum, so the symptoms of any junction (anastomosis) narrowing or any other issue can be very similar to peptic ulcer.
Moreover bile can get back from the small intestine to stomach causing stomach inflammation.

For the stomach ulcer it is characteristic to cause upper middle abdominal pain. The pain is usually dull, constant, not very strong. It does not radiate anywhere.
Nausea can appear.

Junction narrowing can cause bloating, nausea, vomiting after every food and drink.

I my opinion, gastroscopy is the first test you should have right now. Without it, its hard to tell how the situation in the stomach looks like.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.

I have no idea what you just told me. What is Junction narrowing. Due to the Whipple, I do not have a duodenum.

Brief Answer:
Narrow junction does not pass foods.

Detailed Answer:
I do know you dont have the duodenum.
Generally instead of duodenum your small intestine is connected with main bile duct, the rest of pancreas and the stomach.

Junction (or anastomosis) is the connection between two intestine parts or between stomach and small intestine. Such junction must be wide enough to pass foods and liquids.
Now, when it is too tight (narrow), the food can not pass it. This leads to stomach distention, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain right where the stomach is.

To see how it works, to rule out an inflammation of this area and to rule out an ulcer of the stomach, gastroscopy should be done.

Brief Answer:
Try Omeprasole.

Detailed Answer:
You may try Omeprasole 20 mg once a day. This should be OTC. However still gastroscopy should be done.
