default
Posted on Mon, 28 Nov 2016
Question: My husband had knee replacement surgery two weeks ago. He is suddenly experiencing excruciating pain in his foot. The pain has moved from his arch to his ankle and Achilles' tendon area. I've given him two oxycodone tablets and it is still hurting really bad. He can't put weight on it. I have iced it and elevated it. He has a doctor appt tomorrow and does not want to go to the ER. What can I do? Could it be a blood clot?

Brief Answer:
Blood clot less likely.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
A sudden severe pain in the arch of the foot and ankle is less likely to be due to a blood clot. A blood clot pain usually starts in the calf and is associated with pain and swelling.
The pain in your husband's case can be due to an inflammation or a muscle cramp. In case there is a visible swelling in the calf and leg area that is gradually increasing then it is best to attend an ER and get a color doppler study done to rule out any blood clot.
I hope this answers your query.
