Suggest Remedies For Severe Itching In Skin

Posted on Mon, 4 Apr 2016
Question: Despite several treatments with permethrin and eurax I still have crawling, itching feeling. I am spreading this to everyone, my co workers, my family, my trainer. I am at wits end. I've gone to my dermatologist, punched a piece of skin out of my arm to find nothing but inflammation of my skin. What's next?

Brief Answer:
Provided you with an elaborate treatment regimen

Detailed Answer:
Hello sir and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. Based on the information provided on treatment, and also the highly contagious nature of your condition the diagnosis of scabies (itch mite) does seem to be quite accurately, but the most accurate diagnosis is made simply by a physical examination; and I am guessing your doctor did just that.

But there are some patients who do not respond well enough to permethrin, and for that let me list a few alternatives which you can discuss with your doctor along with a few other suggestions:

1. Stromectol (e.g. ivermectin) is an oral medication that has proved to be very effective, and in most of the cases reported to me I make sure I prescribe a combination of oral anti-scabies medication along with the topical application

2. Lindane cream: But carries a few undesired side effects, please discuss with your doctor

3. Sulfur as a topical application

4. This part of my response is the most important in my opinion; you need to understand ma'am that you yourself have caught the itch mite from a source, and as long as that source continues to exist, you will not be rid of the condition. So let me list all the possible sources you could have caught the condition from and what you need to do accordingly:

+Pets in the house (e.g. dogs): You will have to take your pet to a pet clinic and report them to have itch mite, for which they will be isolated and treated for a few days at the clinic or hospital

+Make sure you either dispose of, or boil all your clothes, beddings, linen, etc; and also (and this may sound drastic) but it is widely practised to dispose of your mattress and burn it

+Sexual contact: One of the most common sources, so if you can remember your closest source of sexual contact after which you developed your symptoms, then make sure you keep away from that individual completely and also ask them to seek treatment

+As mentioned by you, you have given the itch mite to family members and many others, and so you will have to keep away from all of them, as will they. Because, picture this: the medication does begin helping you (although you do not experience an improvement symptom-wise) you can get re-infected quite easily by those around you who are also infested

+Spray your entire house, wardrobe, furniture, etc; with anti-scabies sprays (your doctor can help you with this as I am unaware of the brands available in your country)

+Add an anti-histamine to your treatment regimen (e.g. benadryl)

I hope you find my response helpful. Please do not hesitate to write back to me for any further clarifications, I am always here to help. I have tried being as thorough as possible and so I really hope and pray you experience a complete and rapid recovery, I know how annoying this can be as I too once was infested during my medical college dorm days.

Best wishes.

Brief Answer:
I am guessing not all the precautions are being taken ma'am, pls try

Detailed Answer:
Hello once again ma'am.

I truly understand what you are feeling as I too underwent the same thing and really prayed and hoped I would be rid of it at the earliest. But trust me ma'am, getting rid of scabies is all about going about all the steps in a proper and adequate manner.

I reported the case to the hostel XXXXXXX and she had the mattress I was sleeping in burnt. All my clothes were sent to a boiler (available in some washers and dryers), and some were even burnt with the mattress. My room mates were evacuated and I was isolated and confined within my room.

So in order to achieve complete recovery, I think it would be best for you to speak to a doctor and get confined, as this would surely be the best way possible. Have all your clothes boiled elaborately, and go to an infectious hospital where they can make sure they get you rid of this permanently. The steps may seem drastic, but you need to understand that this is a highly contagious condition and by no means can you afford to come in contact with any more mites. At the same time making sure you are being treated for the ones that are on you.

Please understand the process, and I am sure all the medications previously used will show signs of helping you when the given precautions are being taken.

Please do not hesitate to write to me as I am always here to help.

Best wishes.
