Suggest Remedies For Popping Sensation And Pain Between The Shoulder Blades

default
Posted on Wed, 22 Jun 2016
Question: My husband was just putting on his shirt this morning and as he put his right arm through the sleeve he felt a pop in his back between the shoulder blades. He said it's not a muscle spasm. Soon after he felt the pop he felt a burning in his stomache, which has now subsided. He now just feels an ache now. I asked him if he felt OK and he said that he has pain when taking a deep breath. I am concerned that this may not be a back strain. Could it be something more serious that he needs to see a physician.

Brief Answer:
It seems muscular spasm and is not an emergency issue needing urgent care!

Detailed Answer:
I warmly welcome you to HCM and appreciate your concerns about your husband's discomfort. I appreciate your trust in this health forum.

Being your Physician I have thoroughly reviewed your husband's case and can well realize what's actually going on in there.

It seems to be a muscular spasm. It is usually a result of an abnormal and sudden strain on the muscles of back while doing something that needs a stretch on the muscles.

There is no need to worry much as this is manageable at home. You need to apply VOLTAREN GEL on the affected areas, massage it gently for some time and apply heat pad. Do this four times a day.
When he is on some job, he may apply THERMACARE HEAT WRAPS for soothing comfort on the go.
If he feels much unbearable pain he may take by mouth Tablet IBUPROFEN 800mg twice daily after meals, until no pain.

Ask him to keep a healthy diet and take much of the fluids on daily basis.
Avoid extra stretch on back muscles and don't lift heavy weights until he gets better.

Why pain on deep breathing???
The pain felt on deep breaths is also due to spasm of muscles, not to be worried as something separate as an issue. Actually when we inhale deeply, it takes more and more air in needing some extra room. This causes a stretch on the rib cage and its when Accessroy Muscles Of Respiration comes in action. And, back muscles also take part in this process as they are also included in those Accessroy muscles.

He will feel better in a couple of days. If not, you may take him to the Primary Care Physician who will examine and if needed may refer him for Physical Therapy or to an Orthopedist.

Thank you for the advise. It just seemed like such a small little movement that caused so much pain. And I actually have Voltran gel here at home.

Brief Answer:
Yes, it's good idea to use the VOLTAREN you have at home!!!

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back with this follow up here at my virtual clinic. I appreciate you contacted back.

Yes, it happens with even a little movement. With advancing age, muscles and bones get weaker and there is also decreased range of mobility. In females after late in menopause even combing the hair may break the wrist bones. Musculoskeletal disorders get more frequent with advancing age.

It's a good idea to use the VOLTAREN gel you already have at home (don't forget to check the expiry date though).

Keep up with all the suggestions aforementioned for faster recovery.
