Posted on Thu, 8 Dec 2016
Question: My sister is bipolar and has been on Lamictal for about two weeks now. Before this medication, she was welbutrin for a week or so. She has been feeling extremely nauseous throughout these past three weeks. How long will this side effect last?

OK, she was having what we thought were seizures but the doctors diagnosed it as syncope. This started happening a few days after she started taking welbutrin. She felt nauseous right before her first episode.

Brief Answer:
It generally last less than four weeks

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for using Healthcaremagic.

Feeling of nausea and vomiting are well documented side effect of lamictal and generally last around two to four weeks on lamictal. In few of the patients it may remain for longer time and in that situation it is advisable to use PPI for temporary relief.

It is also important to look for other causes of nausea as wellbutrin is not commonly associated with feeling of nausea.

I hope this helps you.

Brief Answer:
Wellbutrin is associated with increased seizure risk

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for reverting back to me.

Although it is possible that she had syncope but the possibility of seizure is there as use of wellbutrin is associated with development of seizures.

Regarding nausea as advised above it will be better to use over the counter PPI for time being (Prilosec 20 mg) till she finds it easy to tolerate current medications.

I hope this helps you further.
Thanks and regards.
