Suggest Remedies For Infected Ears After Piercing

Posted on Fri, 17 Jun 2016
Question: Hello. My 2 year old daughter's year piercing is infected. She had her ears pierced a year ago and we had no problems with them in the past. For the past week the area around one of her piercings was crusty so I removed the earring and cleaned it and desinfected the area around her piecing. I also used Savlon first aid wash for the past 3 days. This morning her piercing is red, swollen, painful and woozing. What should I do? Should I remove the earring or not and what should I apply? Thank you.

Brief Answer:
You can use betadine ointment or solution.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thank you for asking HCM

I have gone through your query and pictures. You can use saline to wash the area and apply betadine solution or ointment. Avoid savlon as it may irritate more. You can also do warm compress. Avoid irritating the piercing. If no improvement then oral antibiotics will be needed. In such case you can approach your GP. No need to remove the piercing.

Let me know if anything not clear.
I am happy to help you.
Thanks.

Thank you for your advice. Unfortunately betadine seems to be available only on prescription. Would Daktacort 2% / 1% w/w ointment be a good alternative as I already have some

Brief Answer:
Daktacort won't be enough.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome again.

Thank you for your follow up.

Daktacort won't be enough. It is just antifungal and corticosteroid and doesn't have antibacterial coverage. You can use neosporin cream or ointment if available. Betadine or Povidone iodine is usually available all most pharmacies.
