Question: what is the best BP medicine with the least amount of side effects? Lisinopril made me cough, cozar made me very dry and swelled my mucous membranes and now Norvasc, causes extreme fatigue. A lower dose is not a good option, I need it to control my BP. I am on 5 mg once a day. Ideas?

Brief Answer:
What are you blood pressure measures?

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this difficulty getting a good blood pressure medicine for you. I will like to know what your latest blood pressure values are at this time so that I can make a recommendation. However, it often takes several trials to identify what works best for you. Let me hear from you about the last values.

I promise to respond as soon as I hear back from you. Until then, I wish you well.

I take it in the evening, maybe 9-10pm, and at 3pm the next day it was 140/90 but I was rushing and worked all day - I have a very high stress job. VP for Hospital operations.

I will recommend lifestyle modifications at this time!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks for this response.

This values is really borderline. I will not rush to drugs right away as there are many non drug means that should be tried as well. I will recommend that you work on reducing the amount of salt you take, exercising at least 150mins very week of moderate physical exercise, avoid over fatty and caloric fast meals. If your weight is over the board, I recommend that you try too reduce it. With a stressful job, this makes management a bit tough and you should be able to re-organize or ask for help.

If these fail to control the blood pressure to less than 140/90, then I will resort to drug measures at that time. Let me know what your immediate thoughts are.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

The best drug is really not standard as patients respond differently and manifest varying side effects. Getting the best drug for a client is always be using the best classes indicated given the blood pressure, race, age, etc. If the patient responds, then we stop there. If the patient doesn’t, we try other options until we find what works. Therefore, it is impossible to provide a drug that works for everyone. All BP medications areas good and that’s why they are on the market. However, clients respond to them differently.

I will say, continue with the prescribed drugs. Give yourself at least three months before making a decision to switch because many people switch too early and never get the chance to know whether it was a good drug for them or not.

As for me, HCT, Lisinopril and and amlodipine are my preferred. When clients don’t, I will switch over to find what works best for them.

I hop this helps. Let me know what your immediate thoughts are.
