Question: my brother has just burned himself with hot water.. very hot boiling water on his right arm.. from his elbows to his hands but not on his hands.. its red and he is in a lot of pain. we put under cold running water for 20 minutes and went to pharmacy where they gave us a pain relieve/antiseptic spray thing and that helped .. they also gave solugel and betadine .. is that enough or does he need to see doctor? it's red and very painful

Brief Answer:
the burn severity has to be assessed

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

the burn severity has to be assessed by a doctor. You've got to take him to the ER. Minor burns with redness alone may be even left alone to heal on their own. So if he's got anything more than redness then the doctor has to assess it.

Kind Regards!

thanks.. he has only redness and is in pain but pain bit ok now as he has used the spray and solugel .. the pharmacist told him if he gets blistering to see doctor.. is that ok? should we keep an eye on it and see how it goes.. it's just half his arm that's why we are bit concerned

Brief Answer:
yes... anything more then just redness requires assessment

Detailed Answer:
Half the arm is about 4.5% of the total body surface, which is a significant but not life threatening burn if managed properly. So the answer to your question is a simple yes... if he gets anything more than his current lesions (redness only) then a doctor will have to assess it. If the pain has gone away already then perhaps it's not that serious.

Kind Regards!
