Question: Dear PD,
My boy is turning 18 months in 2 weeks. He was babbling "baba" mama 6 months ago. Till now he is still babbling "baba" XXXXXXX Bert" boh boh but there was no exact words to be heard yet. "Mama" which he used to say is hardly heard now. Everytime he wants something or see something , he will point and say "ooh! " or "ah" or "um"? and seemed to use pitches instead of words. There was no bye bye or ok yet.

There was a time when he was playing alone and he pointed at the apple picture and said apple 2 times to himself . But when I ask him again he refused to say.

He can understand everything I said and follow instruction but he is not talking a single word yet I supposed . What can I do)

Brief Answer:
Developmental stimulation is very important.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking again on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone through your query and understand your concerns. Although it could just be a part of the normal development of your child, developmental stimulation is very important nevertheless. Early intervention is very important. Look up the expected milestones from:
http://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/actearly/milestones/milestones-18mo.html

Encourage the baby to speak. Continually talk to and interact with your baby. Identify items for him to be more familiar with. Repeat the words slowly so that he is better able to follow. I think that it should soon be fine again. If it does not seem to help, visit a speech and language pathologist and he would demonstrate to you simple techniques and exercises to stimulate his language development.

Thks for reply. First of all I need to know at this stage of 17months is it normal that he can only say bah bah mama XXXXXXX XXXXXXX ? There was one time when he said apple will he was playing alone and when I intervene he refused to say?

When we made him said "pampers" he only say "pers" when ask further he refused to reply. He is yelling , screaming , using high pitches voice to point to us what he wants. Um! Ah!!! Gees' oooh!! Etc but there was no real word like "bye bye" hello can be heard yet.

Do you suggest I wait for a while before seeing a pathologist ? When typically babies start to speak and how late can they do?

Brief Answer:
Overall ok but language stimulation at home required.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back. Sorry for not being able to respond faster.

Although the language development of your baby is more or less normal, usually most children already have a vocabulary of 8-10 words. If you plan to see a speech and language pathologist (SLP), I would not insist you to wait and watch. I was insisting you to visit a SLP so that he could guide you on how to stimulate the languge development in your baby. I have already delineated a few steps in my earlier communication.

The following link would help you understand the normal age by age developments that are expected:
