Suggest Remedies For Crusty, Bleeding And Painful Lesions On Lips

default
Posted on Sat, 26 Mar 2016
Question: Hi, I went to a dermatologist probably 3 months ago and I had crusty lips that always shed skin and it was really painful and sometimes my lips would bleed, over all of that my lips looked very gross because it always appeared in a certain color (yello, etc..). And I also had discoloration on my upper lip which i've had for a very long time but I thought i'd get it treated too. The dermatologist prescribed to me Curacne once a day for the discoloration and Fucidin also once a day for the dry shedding lips. The Curacne has absolutely done nothing and the fucidin always help with the shedding because when i wake up i wash my lips with water and the fucidin along with the shed skin get peeled very easily with no bleeding or lip damage. But I haven't improved a bit since I've started using it, I always try to explain to my dermatologist but he really doesn't even give me more than 2 minutes and it really frustrates me because It's been 3 months and I haven't improved one bit.
Any help would be really appreciated, thank you!

Brief Answer:
Impetigo, antibiotics, zinc, b complex, vitamin c supplementation

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

Two points that you can discuss with your doctor.

Based on the description that you gave in the history, it appears to be impetigo. Oral antibiotics should be advised for crusty, oozy lesions. This would require a prescription from your doctor.

Zinc, vitamin C and B complex vitamin supplementation including vitamin B 1,6, 12 should be done in lesions involving hair nails and skin. These help the tissue structure in healing and repairing well and quickly.

If you are not satisfied with your doctor, you may get a second opinion from another dermatologist by requesting your GP for a referral.

Wishing you best of health

Thanks

Thank you Dr. XXXXXXX for your response, I've looked up Impetigo and it really doesn't correlate with my symptoms or looks. My lips do not ooze anything, they only bleed when i used to peel of the dead skin. Here's a picture to help you with the diagnosis http://postimg.org/image/b2miwwcx9/ . NOTE: I do not have any shedding atm because I used fucidin last night, Im also diagnosed with Seborrheic Dermatitis if that is of any importance to this case.

Yes, based on the image you uploaded, impetigo is less likely now.

If appropriate kindly answer the following.

Have you had unprotected/unsafe sex prior to the onset of these symptoms.
Is this the first episode or have you had such flares , previously.

No I've never had sexual activity as i'm in a very restrictive country (Saudi Arabia) I'm not sure if i've contracted STDs in any other way though. I've had this condition for a very long time not sure when it started but i'd say when I was probably 16 so at start of puberty (I'm 20 right now) .

Detailed Answer:
Hello again.

The upper lip in particular is crusted and discolored most likely involving an infective process. I would urge gram positive covering antibiotics course for 2 weeks including amoxicillin clavulanate or cefadroxil in consult with your doctor. The same antibiotics are usually prescribed in impetigo.

If you haven't had unprotected oral sex then its not possible to contract an STD.

Lubricants like hydrex gel should also be in the regimen. Fusidin can be combined with betamethasone , available as combination usibet and be used accordingly. The zinc and vitamin supplementation should be done as discussed above in the previous reply.

Wishing you best of health

Thanks
