Suggest Painless DPT Vaccination

Question: Hello DPT vaccination for my 3 month old baby is due. We opted for the painless version in the last two months. Now that the painless vaccine is not available in the market we have no choice but to go in for the traditional DPT vaccine which may cause fever and pain. 1.I wanted to know if its fine to get the non painless vaccine this time around when the last two were painless. 2. Secondly we have additionally opted for rotavirus and PCV vaccines. Hope that these vaccines can be given before or after DTP shot. 3. Since the baby was born preterm, he couldn’t get into the habit breast feeding. He currently takes formula milk, though his mother uses breast pump to extract bit of breast milk and gives him in bottle. Is there any way we can get the baby have breast milk directly. 4. Lastly baby is being given folic acid, calcium and zinc supplements. These have been prescribed for a year. I wanted to cross check if these need to be given for a year. Thanks XXXX

Brief Answer: see below Detailed Answer: Hi Thanks for writing to health care magic. 1) Painless DTaP is not available in the market nowadays . It might take a month or so. But DTwP is available. There are various brands of which quinvaxem is the least painful almost comparable to painless. You can take this , no problem , infact it will be better as current guidelines say to give atleast one dose of DTwP for better immunity. 2) Rotavirus and PCV can be taken together along with DTP. You can give a gap of few days if you want. 3) Try squeezing and letting few drops of breast milk while baby is at the breast. This will stimulate him to suck well. Try avoiding bottles . Use paladai or spoon. 4) Being a preterm baby, you need to continue supplements for a year. Wishing your baby good health Regards Dr Arun
