Suggest Medication To Treat Ear Infection

Posted on Thu, 3 Dec 2015
Question: I have an ear infection. Am curious what the best way is to treat one. My doctor always puts me on oral antibiotics and it always takes several courses to get me over it. I have several friends who have ear infections right now and their doctors are treating them with some type of ear drops. Does it depend on the severity of the infections or what? Also, does sudafed or some type of OTC nasal decongestant or something help with discomfort? Both of my ears are infected & the pain wakes me at night. What do you recommend to help the pain?

Brief Answer:
Best way to treat severe painful ear infection is use of oral antibiotics.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome to health care magic,

I have read your query in detail and understand the concern,

The best way to treat severe painful ear infection is the use of oral antibiotics with oral pain killers for some days like 4 to 5 days.

Ear infection could be mostly due to bacterial infection (which are most painful) or it can also be due to viral infection or due to allergy or sinus infection.

You have been given oral antibiotics since you have severe pain and your doctor must have suspected the bacterial infection (mostly streptococcus, staphylococcus etc).

In case of non-bacterial infection one can be given antibiotic ear drops or when there is not much pain.

Sudafed (pseudoephedrine) or some OTC nasal decongestants may help if there fluid or congestion inside ear canal or there is associated nasal or sinus congestion.

In my advise, you should continue with keflex (cephalexin 500 mg) which is a cephalosporin group of antibiotic and it is a very good drug in the treatment of skin, soft tissue and ENT infections.

Even I personally recommend my patients the same antibiotic.

You can take combination of pain killers like paracetamol 500 with diclofenac 100 mg or if there is fluid or pus collection inside ear then serratiopeptidse added with pain killers will certainly help symptomatically.

You can ask your doctor who will know about it.If you are going through so much of pain which wakes you at night,he may prescribe you the same.

Hope this will help you.
