Question: My doctor has wanted to start me on blood pressure pills and I am reluctant. I have tried 2 types and have had bad side effects both times . Is there a natural way to control it. I am 56, and it runs in my family.

Brief Answer:
you should get Ambulatry Blood pressure monitoring

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I am Dr.Rajesh Teli,MD.
I have gone through your query.
Thanks for using HCM.
Basically you have family history of hypertension so you stand high chances of having it.But it is not must that you should have it.As you developed low BP with 20 mg olmisartan ,it is possible that you have white coat hypertension. There are 2 ways to find out.
1.Home monitoring of BP at different intervals.
2.Ambulatory BP monitoring with automated machine which spontaneously measures BP at regular interval as per programming .you may check it for 24 hrs duration ,this will guide us about decision whether to start medicines or not.
I agree you may have cough due to ACE group of medicine .But we have many other drugs available to treat ! So don't worry about side effects.most important is to decide whether you need it or not .
What was your highest BP recorded ?BP above 140/90 is considered high.
I will be glad to guide you further once I get your data.
My best wishes
Dr.Teli.

My highest bp was Aug 9, 148/103 and 162/103. 2 days prior it was 119/85 123/105. from my monitor at home. I had an appointment for Aug 11 to talk to my dr about varicose veins. As I got closer to the appointment, I was getting stressed about how I would tell my dr I never started the 2nd bp meds. By the 9th I could feel that tension and that was when I saw my bp spike. I had started my first meds in sept of last year, 2014. I had my annual checkup due. But this was only a month after my dad passed and I know i was stressed out a lot. Shouldve cancelled that appointment, as i have been monitoring my bp for 4 yrs or so. ever since I did the at home 48hrs bp monitoring, which came up borderline normal /high. I am 170 lbs and do eat carefully, aware of too much salt, and other factors. I excercise reg, yoga ,walking, and bikeriding. The reason I am looking to fix varicose veins. So I can continue walking into my sr years. Also a reason I was nervous to see my dr as she shut me down last time I brought up my need to fix my veins. Maybe I should get a new dr but I've seen this one for 30 some years. thx

Brief Answer:
you may inform your doctor about discontinuing the medicines

Detailed Answer:
hello,
Looking at your history and frequent BP readings it seems that you are having stress induced hypertension. You have valid reason to stop medicine olmetec 20 as you developed hypotension i.e. low BP (Lower than normal).I am sure your doctor will accept this so no need to worry.I my practice of over 25 years i have never scolded any patient who stopped any medicine either due to side effect or Individual intolerance. Most important is to report and to keep regular follow up.I also request you to accept medicine if readings are high.
You have indeed very healthy life style so can certainly observe your BP at various timings and report to your treating doctor.
Decision to fix varicose veins must be made in consultation with Good vascular surgeon.
My best wishes
