Question: WHEN LIBRIUM IS USED TO DETOX FROM ALCOHOL FOR 5 DAYS AND GIVEN TO YOU 4 TIMES A DAY AND ON THE DAY OF DISCHARGE YOU GET 1 LIBRIUM AND ARE SENT HOME WITH NOTHING ELSE, IS THIS SAFE? I KNOW I'M STILL PROBABLY DETOXING FROM THE ALCOHOL AND NOW I'M DETOXING FROM THE LIBRIUM! IS THIS CORRECT PROTOCOL?

The standard protocol for alcohol withdrawal includes librium which is discontinued slowly in one week. This time can vary by plus minus three days. So most of our patients do well in less than one week and discharged to home.
But there is another thing (Thiamine) which should be continued for at least two weeks. If they have not given you thiamine along with librium there is risk other wise it is completely safe.

Thiamine is part of treatment and generally given to all unless otherwise proved that there is no deficiency through blood tests.
It can be given either in tablet form or injectable form. The reason for using is to prevent certain catastrophic complications of sudden alcohol withdrawal.
If none was done you are requested to take thiamine supplement for at least one week duration. They are available over the counter in majority of countries.
