Brief Answer:
need more information

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX
I have read your query.
I will do my best to answer you.

As per the query, your husband has diabetes for the past 1.5 years. But he stopped the medicines for 1 year. May I know what were the medicines, and why did he stop? He probably has also stopped checking the sugars. I will like to know what were the sugars at the time of detection of diabetes, and the last sugars tested on medicines.

Let me tell you, on an unrelated note from the query, that taking the medicines and watching sugars are important. Sugars affect every organ of the body. eyes, nerves, brain, heart, lungs, kidneys, blood vessels all over the body, easily caught infections, delayed wound healings are just the start of the problem of patients with uncontrolled sugars.

I will suggest you start treatment and check FBS, PPBS and HbA1C as soon as possible.

To answer your query regarding food-
I dont know the height, weight and sugars of your husband (with that information, I could calculate the calory intake needed). So I will just tell you the types of foods you need to avoid.
The idea is to avoid foods that are rich in calories and can be easily absorbed, like sugars, chocolates, rice, potatoes, sweets and juices, fruits.
The idea is that with these, the sugar levels shoot up suddenly. And this sudden high rise is worse than a constant but low sugar levels.

Its always better to take low calory foods like cucumber carrots etc.

I always tell my patients- no food is banned, but a control and limitation is needed.

If you tell me the common foods that you cook in your household, I can give you a better information.

Best of luck

Brief Answer:
Keep taking medicines

Detailed Answer:
His sugars came back because he was on medicines
You really need to continue the medicines so that the sugars are under control
Diet will help him. But up to a certain extent. Medicine will be needed.
