Question: My sister aged 56, unmarried, menopaused, is an epileptic and has been taking medicines - Tegrital 200 mg
(Novartis) two in the morning and two in the night for the past 20 years. Now, she gets only seizures about two to three times in a month and lasts about a minute. She has not approached any Doctor for the past 20 years. She is afraid that she may have to undergo all those test like EEG etc. Since, this facility of online advice is available, kindly suggest is there a better medicine than Tegrital 200 mg or dosages or frequency, which can totally stop the seizures.

Brief Answer:
A proper medical follow up is essential

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.
Medicine is a science based on our understanding of our body. Diseases occur when something goes wrong in our body or in the factors that surrounds it. Epilepsy is an ailment which occurs when nerves misfire. This predominantly happens when there is some structural abnormality in the brain or other parts of the nervous system. It is not a good thing that in spite of medication the seizures have been going on so long. Depending upon the type of seizure specific antiepileptics are prescribed. So it is hard for me to comment whether Tegrital-CR (Carbamazepine) is the right medication for her. Ideally the dose should have modified suitably or a changeover made to some other newer antiepileptic. But for that she needed to be in regular follow up with a doctor. Of course, the doctor would have needed to do an EEG and possibly certain other tests to ascertain which medicine is best for her but had she done so, the seizures would probably have stopped entirely by now.
Careful examination and medical investigations are still required by doctors till date. If that data can be procured, it does not matter whether you consult online or XXXXXXX
I hope you understand the situation. For me to be able to suggest the right medication, I still would need an EEG to be done, in addition to details about the nature of the convulsions and so on.
I understand what you had hoped but still I would strongly insist you to convince your sister to visit a doctor (preferably a neurologist) and to remain in his follow up.
There can be no shortcuts to health.
Contact me back anytime and I would always be glad to help.
