Question: Started carafate 4 days ago for gastritis. Also have enlarged pancreas. Can carafate cause pancreatitis? Feel more LUQ pain today like I've had with pancreas. Seeing GI specialist and so far has ruled out gallbladder, EGD only showed gastritis. Do I need ERCP next? MRCP was negative except inflammation. I'm a nurse and getting frustrated, any advise? I'm 60 years old.

Brief Answer:
No need of ERCP.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for choosing "Ask a doctor" forum for your query,
Have seen your details.
Sucralfate does not causes pancreatitis.
Left upper quadrant pain is usually caused by gastritis and gastric ulcers. While sucralfate is an ulcer healing drug it would take some weeks to kick in therefore a proton pump inhibitor along with prokinetic drug(Rabeprazole 20 mg and Domperidom 10mg thrice ) should be taken to stop acid secretion as well as reflux(stop prevacid) or add domperidom to prevacid.
No need of going for ERCP.
All you need is a systemic approach.
When ever there is gastritis there would be inflammation. This inflammation when not taken care of causes ulcers in long runs.
Treatment
Proton pump inhibitors in high dose initially to lower acid secretion(as it would further irritate inflamed area).
Domstal 10 mg Thrice(To prevent any reflux related to acid.
Sucralfate for 3 months to heal the ulcers.
If acotiamide 100mg(available in europe) then take it thrice daily/Can arrange it from Europe,Mexico ,Asia etc.
Hope i was clear and simple to under stand.
Let me know if you have any further query.
Thank you.
