Should I Take EC Pill Inspite Of Having Unprotected Sex With No Ejaculation?

Question: I kinda had unprotected sex yesterday afternoon. A condom was used only near the end when he was about ejaculate but he did pull out before he did, just to be safe I guess. I started back on BC 3 days ago after being off it for only a month because I forgot to start the next card on time. Should I be taking the EC pill ASAP?

Hello and welcome,

I am Dr Madhuri and will be helping you in your queries.

I understand the issue, if there was no ejaculation inside the vagina then chances of getting pregnant are nil. However if there is any doubt about semen being deposited inside then chances of pregnancy are there.

Now about the Birth control pill. If the pill was started on day 1-2 of periods, then there is no need for using the EC pill. If however the Birth control pill was started later than day 2, then protection is usually not there for the first week and so an ECpill is indicated in this case.

So please check if the pill was started on day 1-2 of periods and also if there was any accidental semen deposition. In these cases only EC pill is needed otherwise there is no need.

Hope this satisfies your query.

The pill was started on day 3 of my period which ended the day before yesterday. He keeps telling me it's all in my head and there is no way I could possibly be pregnant but I'm still worried there is a chance I am. Is there any harm in taking the EC tomorrow just to be sure?

Brief Answer:
Please do not worry so much.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome back,

If the period just ended a day ago then chances of pregnancy are extremely low. The pill however was started on day 3 so it does not protect till another 7 days.

The fertile period of a woman is usually from day 10-20 of the cycle. Please check which day of the cycle it was. As the periods have just ended, Chances of getting pregnant are less. Also he did use a condom and ejaculated in the condom, so there is no need to worry. But if you are feeling worried, you may use the EC today or tomorrow. It has to be used within 72 hours of the sexual act.

I feel that if the ejaculation was inside the condom and period ended just a day ago, there is no need to worry. The EC pill causes irregular bleeding, spotting, breast tenderness, bloating and nausea in many women. So please keep this in mind.

So use the pill if you are too worried, but if the contact was before day 10, I feel there is no need. But please do not get stressed as stress delays periods and then again cause a dilemma of being pregnant or not.

Hope this was helpful. Let me know if there are any other issues.

Take care.
