Should I Go For Abortion Inspite Of Having Abnormalities In Fetal Brain?

Posted on Mon, 29 Jun 2015
Question: Hello doc,
I am 13 week pregnant and on 06.06.2015 I did NT scan but the reports are not good. The report is showing deformed face and also had some problem in the head. Doctor advised me to go for abortion. I just want to know whether I will get any help if I go for a second opinion? Is there any hope for a better result?

Brief Answer:
you should consult a fetal medicine specialist

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX, I have gone through your question and understand your concerns. Deformation of face and abnormalities in the brain in the fetus are major congenital anomalies, and such a fetus can have chromosomal anomaly, genetic syndrome or isolated anomaly. I would suggest you to consult a fetal medicine specialist so that you can get a second opinion in ultrasound. Moreover, you should also get a chorionic villus sampling done to confirm the fetal karyotype and rule out fetal chromosomal anomaly, as the recurrence risk in further pregnancies will depend on its result.
If the fetal anomaly is confirmed in second ultrasound, then termination of pregnancy is right management as these are lethal anomalies and such babies usually do not survive after birth.
Hope you found the answer helpful. Please do get back for further queries.
Wishing you good health.

Hello doc,
In 13 week all the structures of foetus is formed? Is it possible that the deformed face can form after a few days? This is my first pregnancy and I have conceived it through IVF that's why I am very much worried and I don't want to lose it. Please give me some positive hopes so that my pregnancy go on smoothly.
