Should I Get Pertussis Vaccination Before A Baby Is Born?

default
Posted on Fri, 2 May 2014
Question: I am about to become a grandmother for the first time. Should I get a pertussis vaccination before the baby is born. My son seems concerned that we( the grand parents) may be at risk of infecting the baby. I haven't had a vaccination ( as far as I remember) since childhood .

Brief Answer: It is certainly good to be vaccinated. Detailed Answer: Hi. I think it will be better if you both get vaccinated against pertusis and vaccine is Tdap. At your age one shot is enough.Even if you are not vaccinated earlier and had some infection before, you must have been protected by natural defence of your body , which is not life long. So, the vaccine will boost that immunity and any caregiver or close contact with the baby should be vaccinated to protect the little one from this deadly disease. The baby will also be vaccinated after 2 months of age and needs protection till then. Thanks.
