Should I Be Concerned About Black Stool And Constipation While On Clarithromyacin, Metronidazole And Prilosec For H.pylori And Acute Gastritis?

Question: I was recently diagnosed with h pylori and acute gastritis. The doctor prescribed clarithromyacin 500mg 2x a day and metronidazole 500mg 3x a day as well as Prilosec. I am now experiencing black stools and constipation. Should I be concerned?

As per your symptoms, the possibility of a gastrointestinal bleeding should be ruled out. Black colored stools should always be assumed to be bleeding from the gut unless otherwise proved.

Your current prescribed medications are usually not associated with such findings.

It’s advisable to take up a complete stool examination including for fecal blood testing to rule out bleeding into the gut.

Further management if any is based on stool report.
