Question: Screening Mammogram FINDINGS: There are scattered areas of fibroglandular density.
There is a focal nodular asymmetry in the posterior aspect of the left breast 9:00-10:00 region. I am 78 and have had several call backs in the past five years and all have been negative on diagnostics. I have a history of clinical palpable masses in the past with ultrasounds and biopsies and everything was negative. Is the posterior location of concern?

Brief Answer:
Suspicious areas in posterior part of breast need routine mammography

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for writing in.

A screening mammogram is a screening test and any suspicious lesions or areas visualised on a screening mammogram need to be evaluated in detail by doing the routine mammogram including the medial lateral oblique (MLO) and craniocaudal (CC) views.

The routine mammogram using MLO and CC views involve mild pressure on the breast in 2 different planes and this helps to study the pattern of breast tissue in detail.

Any doubtful area in the posterior or retroareolar part of the breast is to be visualised in detail by doing a complete routine mammography and probably that is the reason for a follow up routine mammography.

If you have been through call backs and negative biopsies then most likely the breast screening mammogram finding is not of a serious concern, however it should not be ignored.
